Commerce is the art of how to:

  • Find a group of people with a similar problem
  • Convince them to try your solution
  • Build that solution efficiently
  • Capture some of the value created by that solution
  • Figure out if your work is valuable enough to keep doing

By a process similar to natural selection, only the systems that can create and capture enough value to self-sustain remain as time passes. Any system that consumes more than it produces will run out after some time and die.

If you want to create an entity that does good, you need to figure out how to create and capture enough value to self-sustain and grow. Otherwise, your well-intentioned efforts will fizzle.

It’s easy to shake a fist at greed and claim that we just can’t have nice things, but this is a skill issue. Creative thinking about any of those steps can find new ways of making self-sustaining good-creating systems.
